Can I leave my shower out all winter?

Yes! The beauty of an Obrain shower is you can easily pack it up for the winter or leave it out… of course this will weather the wood more quickly but as long as you treat it once a year, it for last for many.

How do I maintain my shower?

We advise that you treat the wood with Messmer's U.V. Plus natural preservative/sealer once each year. This will help keep the wood protected from the elements, giving it a longer life. The stainless steel frame is polished, and does not need any additional coating or protection. It is possible, especially near salt water, that the frame might develop a light oxidation on the surface. This can easily be removed with a Scotch Brite scouring pad, and does not indicate that the frame itself is rusting.
To remove fingerprints and other dirt or oils from the surface of the frame, we've found Weiman stainless steel wipes to work quite well.

Do I have to put my shower on gravel?

We have designed a shower pan that rests beneath the deck of the shower, allowing the gray water to be directed anywhere you would like it to.  Simply attach a hose to the drain point on the pan and set it where you would like the water to drain.  Alternatively, you can set the shower on a shallow bed of gravel that will assist in drainage and provide a level surface for the shower base. As long as the shower water is not pooling beneath the base, but has a way to run off or dissipate into the ground, you should be fine without the gravel. One advantage of locating the shower away from the house is keeping the wastewater away from the foundation.

What if I want to put my shower on my deck?

A deck can be an excellent spot for the shower. A full Solo shower weighs about 400 lbs. We recommend that the deck be framed with framed with pressure-treated lumber, and that the joists beneath the shower be at least 2 x 8"s, 16" on center, to support the extra weight of the shower. Also, since the decking beneath the shower might be exposed to additional moisture, we recommend that the decking be treated with a preservative prior to installing the shower.

What does my plumber need to do?

If you plan to set the shower up using our hot and cold water hoses, a plumber simply needs to come install a hot water spigot coming out of your house, ideally next to an already existing cold water/garden hose spigot. This should not cost more than a couple of hundred dollars. If you would like to permanently install your shower, your plumber can connect it with buried pipes and a traditional shower installation.

Are there code issues in connection to grey water that I need to be aware of?

The rules vary from state to state. It's best to check with your local plumbing inspector to see what your state guidelines are.

How will the wood weather? Do I have to treat it?

The woods we have chosen to use for the shower are exterior hardwoods – extremely durable and weather resistant. However, like any hardwood deck, they will gray over time if left untreated. This is a natural process resulting from exposure to the sun's UV radiation. We pre-treat all our wood with Messmer's U.V. Plus , a sealer/protector especially formulated for dense hardwoods. To preserve the rich color and retard the graying process, we recommend that you re-treated the wood with Messmer's, or a similar product at least annually.

How will the wood hold up in extreme heat, such as Palm Springs, CA?

It should hold up fine, although it might need to be treated on a more regular basis. However, we have not tested the wood ourselves in extreme heat environments, and cannot make claims about how well it will perform. If this is a concern, we are developing showers using a number of wood alternatives that will be guaranteed to resist cracking and weathering. Please contact us for details.

Can the shower be hooked up to a solar hot water system?

Sure. We are currently developing an in-line passive solar heating system for use with the shower, and hope to have it ready for shipment sometime next fall. Please contact us if this is of interest to you, and we will let you know as soon as it is ready.
